Banff Hot Springs Hotel

Banff National Park is one of the most beautiful places in the world. UNESCO has named it a World Heritage Site, and it’s on most travelers’ must-see lists. Spectacular in all seasons, the park is near a cute town with good shopping and restaurants.

There are gorgeous trails for hiking and mountain biking in summer. You can take a gondola up the mountain for incredible views and then hike down. During the winter, skiers come from all over Canada, and there’s also snowmobiling, dog-sledding, and sleigh rides.

Perhaps the most beautiful time of year is the fall when the larch and aspens paint the landscape with gold.

The most famous Banff hotel is the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel, which opened in 1888. It was built by the Canadian Pacific Railway on a bluff above the Bow River, and it’s visible from all over Banff. The hotel has been expanded and updated several times, and today, it’s huge, with 15 restaurants and bars, a top-notch spa, tennis courts, and Olympic swimming pool. If you don’t stay here – it’s a very expensive place – come for a look or a drink on the lawn. Most Banff tours make a stop here, so the lobby is often jammed.

Located on Sulphur Mountain about five minutes from the heart of town, the Rimrock Resort is a very nice property that’s less expensive than the Banff Springs. The location is convenient to the hot springs and the Banff gondola – it’s about a five-minute walk. And there’s shuttle service to and from town so you can go shopping or go to dinner without driving. The restaurant at the Rimrock, Eden, is a Five Diamond Award winner, so you’ll want to eat at the hotel too. Most of the rooms have beautiful views and the terrace is one of the most attractive places in Banff for a drink. The heated pool is great for relaxing after an active day.

Closer to town, the Fox Hotel and Suites is one of the newest Banff hotels, and it’s less expensive than the Rimrock. Looking like a mountain lodge with lots of stone and wood beams, it’s a cozy place with a pool area designed to look like the original Banff hot springs. With terraces or balconies, fireplaces, and kitchens, the loft suites are especially nice. There’s a fitness center and a Chili’s restaurant on site.

The Delta Royal Canadian Lodge has a Grotto Spa, heated indoor pool, Jacuzzi, and sauna. The 99 rooms have mini fridges, coffee makers and Internet access. Canadian cuisine is served in the Evergreen restaurant. The location is convenient to everything.

About a mile outside of town, Buffalo Mountain Lodge is one of the best hotels in Banff for those who want peace and quiet. You can take the city bus into town – it stops right out front. Accommodations here are located in several buildings scattered around the eight-acre property. All the rooms have patios or balconies, fireplaces, and DVD players. The lobby, which looks like a timber-frame lodge, is an inviting place for a toddy. Two of the best restaurants in Banff – The Sleeping Buffalo and Cilantro – are two more great reasons to stay here.
